Welcome to the world of Computing

With the launch of the new 2014 National Curriculum, Computing is the new name for what was referred to as ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in the previous version and IT (Information Technology in the version before that).

Essentially, the main difference is that the aspect of computer programming or ‘Coding‘ as it is referred to, has a much higher profile.

The children will still learn the things they have in the past such as;

  • Using the internet effectively and Safely.
  • Collecting and Processing images 
  • Wordprocessing
  • Desktop publishing
  • Data processing such as spreadsheets, databases and data-logging.
  • Computer modelling.


The focus on Coding is intended to better prepare our children for the digital world they live in and the industries they may be involved in later in life.

For the Coding aspect of the curriculum there are a variety of programs that will be used and some of these are easily accessed by the children at home.

The three main programs being used are: Espresso Coding, Scratch, code.org and Kodu. I will provide more information to children, parents and carers about these programs as each becomes relevant to them.

General Information

  • The Academy operates a secure filtered network running forensic software to monitor activity on a new server installed in the 2014 Summer break.
  • Each child has an individual password protected login to the system and a dedicated personal Microsoft Office Outlook account for email (For use in and out of school).
  • Access is via an up-to-date wireless network installed in 2013
  • Each classroom is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard and Key Stage 2 classrooms all have the latest touchscreen HD displays.
  • Foundation Stage children access Computing via a mixture of desktop computers and portable devices called Fizzbooks which are essentially small touchscreen netbooks.
  • Key Stage 1 and 2 children access Computing via a mixture of desktop computers and laptops. Computing is taught as a discreet lesson each week with each child having access to their own machine.
  • The Academy also has a whole range of ancillary equipment such as cameras, microscopes and programmable toys.
