Physical Education (PE)

PE allows children to develop a lasting enjoyment of sport. Children learn a range of life skills in this incredibly important subject that will support many aspects of their lives. A child will develop both physical skills and the skills required to make a positive leader. Hopefully these skills will enable them to take a more active role in their futures.
Areas covered within PE at Glebe Academy include fundamentals of movement, throwing and catching skills, travelling (including gymnastic skills as well running/jogging) tactics for specific team games, athletic disciplines and swimming. We have a residential trip in Year 6 to Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre, where children have the opportunity experience new sports such as caving, bouldering, archery and orienteering.
Glebe encourages the development of staff through a partnership with Blythe Bridge High School, who support the teaching of the subject and participation in competitive events. Through a wide and varied range of disciplines we strive to stimulate children’s interest in this subject and encourage a healthier lifestyle.

Purpose of study

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
• develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
• are physically active for sustained periods of time
• engage in competitive sports and activities
• lead healthy, active lives
